What are Liberal Arts and Sciences?

LAS programmes recognise the need for true interdisciplinary collaboration in order to identify and tackle the societal challenges facing the world today. Particular emphasis is placed on promoting intercultural awareness and understanding, on the development of critical analysis and reflection, and on the ability to provide leadership and to make articulate and persuasive arguments.

What does EPICUR offer in this field?

From September 2021, teachers from the 8 EPICUR member universities will propose 20 courses in three different tracks:

Track core. Courses focus on:

  • building intercultural competencies, collaboration, and communication skills;
  • improving research, analysis, and evaluative skills;
  • applying knowledge to real-world problems.

European Identities. Courses focus on:

  • discovering histories, cultural geography, and social structures of Europe
  • exposure to literatures, media, and other cultural output relevant for understanding and analysing current issues in Europe.
  • conceptualising and engaging with dynamic concepts of cultural identity, multilingualism, cultural change and intermixture.

Natural & Societal Sustainability. Courses focus on:

  • the interdependent economic, environmental, and cultural drivers of sustainability challenges as well as resulting conflicts of goals and interests;
  • fostering students’ ability to engage with real-life complexities from the local to the global level;
  • investigating the complex and dynamic interactions between natural and human systems and how these can be transformed in a sustainable way based on a long-term perspective.

EPICUR is developing a wide variety of state-of-the-art teaching and learning formats with an emphasis on collaborative teaching and learning. These courses deal with real-world problems, include interdisciplinary and intercultural perspectives, and aim to inspire critical thinking and autonomous and transformative learning. The wide variety of state-of-the-art teaching formats include joint and parallel courses, joint block courses, excursions and summer schools, on-location and digital.
