The EPICUR Alliance is celebrating its 3rd public FORUM!
Hosted this year by the University of Freiburg, the FORUM took place from September 14 – 16, 2022
The objective of the Forum is to engage all 9 University communities in passionate activities & exchanges around topics which are directly linked to the activities of the EPICUR Alliance during the three-year pilot phase. This year’s Forum aims at gathering together students, staff members and interested parties from our partner institutions and beyond around different activities dedicated to the topics of Experiences, Successes, Transitions.
Experiences
Reflection on EPICUR´s partner´s experiences and lessons learned in the last three years are an important step in moving forward into the full-roll-out phase (EPICUR SHAPE-IT).
Successes
During the three-year pilot phase, EPICUR has gained valuable expertise and has made major achievements through joint collaboration between its partner institutions but also their regional networks and partners from outside academia. You will have the opportunity to learn about these central aspects of EPICUR´s work in different formats, such as the plenary, expert panels or the poster walk.
Transitions
In the last three years, EPICUR has committed to new visions of teaching, learning and research. Our expert panels offer insights in three areas (new teaching formats, long distance learning and interaction with society) that are central to EPICUR’s vision and will continue to evolve as EPICUR-SHAPE-IT moves towards the creation of a truly European University.

David Patrician
Moderator Wednesday, September 14th & Thursday, September 15th
David Patrician is an American moderator/journalist based in Hamburg, Germany. He came to Germany on a Fulbright Scholarship and has reported for a variety of media outlets (i.e. Newsweek, Deutsche Welle, n-tv, RTL Nord and the Hamburger Abendblatt). In addition, he has moderated numerous international events and conferences, including the TEDxFrankfurt and Germany’s Young Economic Summit (YES!). In addition, he is a member of the Global Diplomacy Lab, a platform established by the German Federal Foreign Office, for exploring a new and more inclusive diplomacy which goes beyond traditional politics. http://davidpatrician.com/en/
Vanessa Debiais-Sainton is Head of the Unit in charge of Higher Education policies and programme at the European Commission’s Directorate General for Education, Youth, Sport and Culture. The unit is the lead service for European policies on reform and transformation of higher education, the new European Universities initiative, automatic mutual recognition of higher education qualifications, the creation of the EU student card, and the higher education strand of Erasmus+. In previous posts in the European Commission, Vanessa has worked in DG Research and Innovation. Before moving to the European Commission in 2006, Vanessa spent eight years working for several petroleum and chemical companies.

Kerstin Kieglstein

Professor Dr. Kerstin Krieglstein studied from 1984-1987 Chemistry at the University of Marburg and Pharmacy at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich. She completed her PhD thesis in Pharmacy in 1990 and qualified as a university lecturer in Anatomy and Cell Biology at the University of Heidelberg in 1997 (habilitation). She was professor for Anatomy from 1999-2001 at Saarland University, from 2001-2007 at the University of Göttingen and from 2007-2018 at the University of Freiburg. From 2018-2020 she was Rector of the University of Konstanz. Since October 2020 she is Rector of the University of Freiburg.
Laurent Boetsch is an Executive Director and co-founder of the European Consortium for Liberal Arts and Sciences (ECOLAS) and President Emeritus of the European College of Liberal Arts, Berlin (now Bard College Berlin). His academic career spans more than 40 years as teacher and senior administrator dedicated to the advancement of the liberal arts and sciences in higher education in the United States and abroad.

Michel Deneken

Michel Deneken is a university Professor of Catholic Theology. He has been teaching at the University of Strasbourg since 1989 where he became a Professor in 2003. He was Dean of the Faculty of Catholic Theology of the Marc Bloch University from 2001 to 2009. From January 2009 to December 2016, he was First Vice-President in charge of Finances and then of Initial and Continuing Education at the University of Strasbourg. On 13 September 2016 he took over the presidency of the University. Since 2019, Mr. Deneken is also Chairman of the EPICUR Alliance.
Jean-Marc Planeix is a professor at the University of Strasbourg. Jean-Marc Planeix, Vice-President for Academic Partnerships and Governance at Unistra and Strategic Coordinator of the EPICUR alliance.
He is a former student of the École normale supérieure de Saint-Cloud and holds a master’s degree in physical sciences and a postgraduate degree in organic chemistry from the University of Paris 11 Orsay. He was Dean of the Faculty of Chemistry from 2009 to 2019. He is an officer in the order of the Palmes académiques.

Nikolina Đurić
Expert Panel no 3 “Interaction with Society” Thursday, September 15th at 02.30 pm – 04.00pm
Nikolina has been involved in education since 2015, firstly as a volunteer in the Erasmus Student Network in Serbia where she spent 5 years fostering the internationalisation and integration of students on mobility, and later on as an English tutor, working with children and adults from all over the world for 3.5 years. Since 2020, she has been stationed in Brussels where she works on improving and promoting mobility programmes, Erasmus+ in particular, together with her colleagues at the Erasmus Student Network AISBL.
Johannes studies water management and civil engineering at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna. He joined EPICUR right in the beginning. As the chair of the EPICUR student board and former chair of the BOKU Student Union and his current activities in the Austrian Student Union and the European Student Union, he has a lot of experience in university politics. Apart from his studies and international engagement he is a passionate long-distance and ultra cyclist and likes Yoga.

Daniela Kleinschmit

Daniela Kleinschmit is Professor for Forest and Environmental Policy at the University of Freiburg. Her research interest comprises land use policies with focus on forest and bioeconomy. Daniela Kleinschmit has initiated and coordinated various research projects and published numerous scientific papers, chapters and edited volumes. She is actively supporting diverse science-policy interactions at different political levels and is as Vice-president of the International Union of Forest Research (IUFRO) well connected in the international scientific community. As Vice-Dean, Dean and since last year Vice-President of University Freiburg she has been actively engaged in research management and governance.
Phillip Stöcks is a Master student of both Physics and Gender Studies at UFR and is currently finishing his Master theses. He has been involved in EPICUR since its beginning. Formerly, Phillip was a member of the University council of the University of Freiburg and on the Executive Committee of the DAAD among other occupations. He has been interested in the development of higher education from a diversity- but also a STEM perspective.

Janosch Nieden

Janosch Nieden holds the position as Director of the European Grouping for Territorial Cooperation (EGTC) “Eucor – The European Campus”, a trinational association of 5 universities on the Upper Rhine, since May 2016. After studying public administration in Potsdam and Paris, he first started his professional career as coordinator of a Franco-German study program at the Ecole Nationale d’Administration in Paris. In 2012, Janosch took over the coordination of the science pillar of the Trinational Metropolitan Region Upper Rhine in Kehl, near Strasbourg, before joining Eucor in 2015.
Dr. Simon-Peter Kafui Aheto is a Senior Lecturer in Information Technology & Education; and Co-ordinator of the Course Delivery Unit of at the Department of Distance Education of the University of Ghana. He is an Educational and Information Technologist and Youth Development practitioner. Currently, Dr. Aheto is the Lead Researcher for the UNESCO National Assessment on Internet Universality Indicators (IUI) for Ghana. His research areas include IT and Educational Law, Learning Analytics, Distance Education, Rhizomatic Learning, Blockchain in Education and Gender issues in Education.

Anouk Tso

Anouk Tso is currently Director of International Affairs at the University of Amsterdam. In this role, she is responsible for delivering the University’s International Strategy and leading on the university-wide implementation of the lines of action underpinning this strategy. Key responsibilities include initiating and maintaining strategic partnerships with universities and partners abroad and coordinating the UvA’s participation in European and global networks, such as LERU , U21, and EPICUR European University.
As project manager and lecturer for the EPICUR European Tracks, Stefanie is responsible for developing collaborative teaching and learning formats for the new study track “Natural and Societal Sustainability Studies“. She studied Physics with the main focus on environmental physics at Heidelberg University. As a Ph.D. candidate, she assesses strategies to transform society into a more sustainable future while considering economic incentives, legal regulations, and social norms change. In teaching, she is interested primarily in system thinking and student-centered education that fosters student agency.

Steven Randall

Steven Randall received his Ph.D. in Second Language Acquisition & Teaching at University of Arizona (UA) with an emphasis in Sociolinguistics and ESL. From 2008 to 2020, he served in various administrative and teaching roles at the UA Center for English as a Second Language, most recently as Associate Director of Academic Programs in charge of curriculum design and implementation for the combined ESL/credit-bearing pathway transitional program for international students. Since 2020, he has worked at University College Freiburg serving as the lead of EPICUR Work Package 3, which is charged with developing LAS-inspired “Innovative learning & teaching formats for European Citizens of the Future”.
Thrasyvoulos Tsiatsos is currently Associate Professor in the Department of Informatics of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece and a member of the Software and Interactive Technologies (SWITCH) Lab. He obtained his Diploma, his Master’s Degree and his PhD from the Computer Engineering and Informatics Department of Patras University (Greece). He is WP4 leader in EPICUR alliance, leading the implementation of the EPICUR Inter-University Campus (EUIC). His research interests include Virtual Learning Environments, Serious Games and Gamification and Open and Distance Education.

Nina Hol is a bachelor law student at the University of Amsterdam, who is involved in all aspects of student involvement, both within the university, on a national level, and within EPICUR as Vice-Chair of the Student Board.
Friederike Schulte

Friederike Schulte is the Director at the Carl-Schurz-Haus/German-American institute in Freiburg. Before taking on this position in 2010, she was the program manager at the Stuttgart James-F.-Byrnes-Institut/German-American Center. She received her Master’s Degree at the University of Tuebingen in American Literature. Her work encompasses fostering transatlantic understanding in the local community through public outreach with events on politics, the arts and current matters.
