DESCRIPTION:Are you an early career researcher considering applying for an EPICluster mobility grant? If yes\, come join us for this info session!  \n\n\n\nThis informational session aims to explain the concept and application procedure of the EPICluster to interested Early Career Researchers (ECRs)\, including PhD students\, junior professors\, Postdocs\, junior group leaders through assistant professors\, who are planning to apply for an EPICluster. ECRs will have the opportunity to run research projects with the benefits of both mobility funding and institutional support provided through EPICUR.  \n\n\n\nBrief program overview:   \n\n\n\nEPIClusters offer tailor-made experiences at one of the partner universities for researchers from both academic and non-academia and serve as a network for scientific exploration and ideas spanning the alliance. Each EPICluster will gather at least 5 early career researchers and non-university professionals in residence at one of the EPICUR-Research partner universities for a 1-to-6-month residency for research\, creation\, and experimentation.  \n\n\n\nThe Call for Applications is open to groups of a minimum of 5 early career researchers. Applicants must come from at least 3 different EPICUR universities. SUMMARY:EPICamp V: Sustainable cities and regional transitions
DESCRIPTION:The EPICamp will take place online and is hosted by the BOKU University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences\, Vienna. It will take place on March 31th to April 1st 2022\, submission deadline for all types of thematic contributions is 7 March 2022\, registration is open until 30 March 2022. \nPlease find attached a PDF version of the Call for Participation\nConference abstract\nRapid urbanisation turns cities into highly dynamic building blocks of sustainable development. Urban sustainability is regularly examined in relation to the living environment\, its design\, supply of ecosystem services\, its appropriation and transformation\, both on an object scale (e.g.\, what do streets or urban green spaces look like\, how can they be transformed along the mobility shift and what are their effects) and on a larger scale (e.g.\, green space provision and green space justice)\, and includes both immediate and long-term effects of the XXI century crisis such as effects of climate change or the COVID-19 pandemic on societal needs\, expectations\, and behaviour. Sustainability at the urban scale is thought of not only as an interdisciplinary\, cross-cutting issue between different topics like urban landscape planning\, mobility\, urban environmental justice\, or waste management\, but also as tightly related to the relationships with the urban hinterland.Cities are already characterised by a relatively low per-capita resource use and emissions as compared to national averages. However\, cities also heavily draw on complex supply chains from their national hinterland or from other countries\, inducing significant resource use and emissions elsewhere which increases the overall ecological footprint of goods and services consumed by city residents. Considering this spatial disconnection between production and consumption is essential in urban sustainability analysis. Consequently\, cities have to be thought of as embedded in their regional rural hinterland\, as well as in the wider national and global economy and in a multi-scale and multi-layer ecosystem services system. Promoting local circular commerce and reducing outsourcing of environmental burdens in production chains may allow reducing emissions\, ecological footprints\, and increasing care for the environment. SUMMARY:EPICamp IV: Hydrosphere: Challenges of preserving and using WATER (Eco-)Systems in the Anthropocene .
DESCRIPTION:The EPICamp will take place online and is hosted by the University of Freiburg. It will take place on March 23-24 2022\, submission deadline for all types of thematic contributions is February 15 2022\, registration is open until 19 March 2022. \nPlease find attached a PDF version of the Call for Participation\nConference abstract\nAddressing the hydrosphere\, this EPICamp will look at water (eco-) systems impacted by both natural processes and human intervention. Water is equally a natural and social resource at the core of human existence which in turn has deeply shaped the waters that flow through the Earth. Taking an Anthropocence perspective\, we invite a fully interdisciplinary approach – combining ecological\, biological\, earth\, and social sciences – to discuss challenges\, opportunities\, and solutions for the socio-ecological systems of water. \nThis includes thinking about sustainable management of water resources\, the preservation of biodiversity\, the ecosystem functioning for healthy societies but also the interconnection between the environment and cultural identities\, such as the conservation of traditional ways of life and the creation of resilient economies based on water(s). \nAquatic ecosystems are fragile and sentinel systems of reckless human-induced global change. In the future\, they are likely to become even more fragile in terms of ecosystem functions and services. Human-induced environmental changes including elevated greenhouse gases\, over-fertilization of aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems\, habitat fragmentation\, increasing extraction of resources from terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems\, and the mass production of harmful substances worldwide all negatively affect ecosystem functioning\, global natural cycles\, and biodiversity. They also have long-term consequences on the human health and the viability of entire communities. Therefore\, it will be a precondition to identify the complex interplay of local and global human actions which lead to local environmental impacts and adaptation. Considering far-reaching challenges related to the global changes we are facing\, this EPICamp will integrate knowledge on adverse human impacts on the ecosystems formed by lakes\, rivers\, water sheds\, marshes\, and marine waters. It will stimulate discussion on adaptive and mitigation efforts against these challenges\, identifying solutions which provide a balance between satisfying human needs and ecosystem demands. In order to balance the natural / engineering sciences with more human-centred approaches\, this EPICamp in particular invites scholars from the emerging field of Environmental Humanities. Yet what does that mean and how can we transform this politically charged term into a scientific object? Culture is a main repository of available identities within a given space\, and developing a shared identity is a prerequisite for the proper functioning of social and political institutions such as the European Union. Financial solidarity means to pay for other nations and this requires sharing a common sense of belonging. That is why European parliamentarians and commissioners regularly invoke European identity. In a time in which the European idea has come under much scrutiny\, this EPICamp will provide a space to develop new approaches to European identity. Instead of invoking a hypothetical singular European identity\, we propose to use interdisciplinary and international advances on collective identities in general\, including non-European identities\, to challenge and rethink this basis of community as well as social and political action. Through comparing our ways of understanding collective identities (disciplines\, research fields\, theories\, methodologies\, results)\, we will hopefully reach new conclusions and best practices for Europe. \nEarly career researchers\nPotential participants of the EPICamps should have a general interest in conducting interdisciplinary research and/or working in a transdisciplinary manner with non-university partners. You should have a proven interest in the topic of the EPICamps you wish to attend. SUMMARY:2nd EPICamp "Sustainability\, material use and climate justice"
DESCRIPTION:In order to tackle the climate crisis and to enable a sustainability transformation\, we need to recognize planetary boundaries and adapt our demand accordingly while considering intra- and intergenerational justice. A sustainability transition is required\, away from fossil fuel use towards a circular bioeconomy\, where limited resources such as land and raw materials are used carefully and in a way that intra- and intergenerational justice at multiple social and spatial scales is assured. The resulting societies\, and their production and consumption patterns\, are envisioned to rest on renewable resources (biomass\, wind\, solar\, hydro\, etc.) and on non-renewables (like metals or sand) that are used only in a circular manner and within planetary boundaries. But this transition entails changed resource requirements potentially resulting in new sustainability concerns regarding the expected additional pressure on land ecosystems (for biomass production as well as surface area for conservation or infrastructure etc.) which are already in competition with provisioning for agricultural\, forestry\, infrastructural\, and settlement needs\, as well as competing with challenges of biodiversity conservation and human well-being more broadly. \nQuestions arise not only about how such a transition can be achieved\, but also which justice implications are entailed to different societal groups. \nTraditionally\, large scale transformation scenario modelling has paid little attention to equity and justice questions at the national and\, in particular\, the sub-national scale. Here\, strong commitments to rapidly curb greenhouse gas emissions by transitioning to a decarbonized economy meet with local efforts to address the impacts of climate change. The EPICamp will be an immersive experience bringing together researchers\, non-university partners and from our eight partner universities and beyond. \n\n\n\nMobility\, migration\, and multilingualism have shaped and challenged European society(ies) for centuries; from the middle ages to contemporary times\, movements of diverse population groups have changed the production and communication of knowledge and impacted linguistic\, social\, cultural as well as economic and political systems. The first EPICamp of 2021 will take place under the umbrella of the EPIChallenge “Mobility\, Migration\, Identity”\, bringing together scholars from a broad spectrum of disciplines and fields so as to invite multiple perspectives on these topics. \n\n\n\nFrom the impact of exploration and expansion by early elites to the many forms of voluntary as well as forced migration throughout the past centuries\, Europe’s peoples have shaped and been shaped by the interactions with global forces as much as by inner-European movements. Many issues that affect our European Society(ies) today mirror developments which have recurred throughout Europe’s long and complex history\, creating linguistic and socio-cultural (e.g. ethnic\, religious) plurality. This in turn engendered manifold forms of governing institutions and economic systems to address and steer such plurality. Trends and attitudes towards migration\, mobility\, and multilingualism observed today can be traced back to the past that in turn foreshadowed the present. SUMMARY:EPICUR celebrates multilingualism! At the University of Strasbourg
DESCRIPTION:Under the scope of the EPICUR European University Alliance\, the University of Strasbourg wishes to bring together experts\, teaching and administrative staff\, students and high school pupils for an afternoon of exchange on issues related to multilingualism. This event is planned on the eve of the European Day of Languages organised by the Council of Europe every 26 September. \n\n\n\nThe event consists in a plenary session with introductory speeches from various institutional personalities\, and a presentation of the first results of the questionnaire on students’ incentives to learn foreign languages\, followed by two sessions happening simultaneously: \n\n\n\nOn the one hand\, a workshop aimed at EPICUR students and French high school students will allow them to discuss in groups around students’ motivation to learn foreign languages. On the other hand\, a workshop-conference will take place\, where researchers\, experts\, teachers and staff will be able to give presentations followed by discussions on multilingualism topics encountered daily in EPICUR\, namely the management of multilingual and multicultural classrooms and the role of English in higher education.\n\n\n\nFor any questions\, please contact multilingualism@epicur.education

SUMMARY:Launch of the EPICUR European Model Language Policy
DESCRIPTION:The language policy launch will be a hybrid event and will feature the “unboxing” of the EPICUR European Model Language Policy. The 9 September 15:00 CEST. \n\n\n\nAfter signing a joint statement on Multilingualism\, the EPICUR alliance has been working hard to develop the first-ever European model language policy for European universities which will be presented during a hybrid  event. \n\n\n\nThe launch event is open to all European universities and public institutions and will feature the “unboxing” of the EPICUR European Model Language Policy by EPICUR student and staff representatives. \n\n\n\nThe model language policy aims to offer a framework in which linguistic and cultural inclusiveness\, diversity and accessibility within higher education institutions is highlighted at both the institutional as the European universities alliance level. DESCRIPTION:The last year and a half of struggling with the coronavirus made it necessary for the education sector to transfer didactic work to virtual reality and to alter existing learning methods. After a few semesters\, a need has emerged to summarise what has been done so far and what are the results.  \n\n\n\nThat was the motivation behind organising the International Student Conference „Pros and cons of distance learning. An interdisciplinary perspective.” \n\n\n\n The conference was established to create space for an interdisciplinary discussion on the advantages and disadvantages of distance learning\, its results and perspectives for the future. \n\n\n\n Held entirely in English on 22nd and 23rd of June 2021\, it will be a part of EPICUR Project.  \n\n\n\nAuthors are looking for various perspectives on distance learning from many countries and fields of study. The event will be held entirely remotely. Details of access will be published shortly before the conference on the FB page of the event.

DESCRIPTION:As the world begins its recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic\, an emphasis must be placed on sustainable development. DESCRIPTION:The event has been postponed to June. After signing a joint declaration on Multilingualism\, the EPICUR alliance has been working hard to develop the first-ever European model language policy for European universities which will be presented during a virtual event planned on 29 April. The launch event is open to all European universities and public institutions and will also include a panel discussion Students\, staff and representatives from other European University alliances and the European Commission will be asked to reflect on the importance and impact of the model language policy. \n\n\n\nThe model language policy aims to offer a language framework which could help promote linguistic and cultural inclusiveness\, diversity and accessibility within higher education institutions. The document consists of two mains sections on the institutional-level and the alliance-level. The model language policy also contains almost 20 topical best practices from EPICUR universities and European universities alliances on how multilingualism is implemented and promoted in the fields of teaching & learning\, research\, governance and communication. \n\n\n\nThe main organizer of the launch event is the University of Amsterdam as the coordinating partner for the theme Multilingualism within the EPICUR alliance. A contest where students take their future into their own hands!  The principle? Be creative\, alone or in a team\, to imagine solutions with a digital component that renovate\, improve\, simplify\, transform\, invent… tools or services in favor of student success.  Stéphanie Nolot\, from the University of Strasbourg’s Institute for Pedagogical Development and Innovation\, will be our speaker and accepted to answer some questions about the project and its interest for EPICUR.   \n \n \n \n1. What is the Hacketafac project all about? HackeTaFac is a competition which encourages students to propose digital projects which will benefit the students’ community. No need to be a digital expert\, instead\, we ask them to have a project that seeks to enhance students’ achievement\, and which is related to one of the 8 HackeTaFac themes. It can be a software to help stay organized\, a forum to share ideas\, a website to study and play\, … If they win\, we’ll bring them support and training and up to 10 000€ to realize their project. HackeTaFac is a true collaboration between students and staff\, which lead to innovative solutions developed by students for students.  \n \n2. What is your role in the project? How did you come to be involved in it?  Actually\, I’m a new-comer in HackeTaFac ! The project has been initiated by my colleagues Alexandra Delaunay and Coralie Bajas-Schaefer in 2018\, who actively contributed to its definition\, development and execution. Since September 2020\, I’m in charge of the HackeTaFac global organization\, dealing with administrative\, logistic and communication aspects. I also bring support to team projects. In collaboration with Hassania Sebti\, from the Entrepreneurship Department (ETENA)\, we advise students on project management\, help them find contacts and information and have a facilitating role when needed. We also work closely with our internal partners to propose ways of improving the HackeTaFac challenge.   \n \n3. What challenges does HackeTaFac seeks to address? The main purpose is to create innovative solutions\, which will benefit to all students. In that order\, 8 challenges are proposed to the applicants: prepare for your exams\, becoming a student\, imagine tomorrow’s green campus\, prepare your cross-border mobility\, imagine how to invest alternative places\, manage your time\, prepare your future\, and a free subject.  \n \n4. When is it taking place? Is it the first edition?  HackeTaFac challenge takes place every 2 years. The first edition was in 2018. The next one will start in 2022.  \n \n5. What is the role of students and teaching staff in it?  HackeTaFac requires a real involvement from students\, as they’re studying and developing their project during their curriculum! Most of the time\, the first weeks are dedicated to defining the scope: they discuss about feasibility and deadlines with internal experts\, detail their forecast budget\, ask for advice to external professionals\, etc. They also improve their skills thanks to Project Management trainings or Value Proposition. All along the project\, they become more and more autonomous. Some of them are really enthusiastic to collaborate with their peers and propose student internships. At the same time\, they elaborate surveys and plan beta tests to obtain regular feedbacks from the Community. All motivated teachers are invited to participate to these events and teams are always looking for advice\, knowledge and support from them.  \n \n6. How and what can EPICUR learn from the Hacketafac project?  The big innovation in this project is the fact that it is students themselves who carry out projects that concern them directly. They are at the heart of the design\, and there is a real collaboration between them and us. Too often\, when students think of a project\, they don’t know which actors to approach and are sometimes even suspicious of the institutions they are part of. We are there to help them meet the right actors so that they can develop their skills.  \n \n7. What do you expect from your EPICURtalks on April 6th? What I really expect from the EPICURtalks is to get feedback from university staff from other universities of the Alliance\, whether they are teachers or coordinators. Of course\, there will be a short presentation of the project. But the idea is really to create a space for the exchange of good practices\, a constructed and provided dialogue. Perhaps afterwards they will even be able to copy and paste the concept in their respective universities!  The EPICURtalks series explores the advancement in teaching & learning\, including Liberal Arts and Sciences approaches as well as developments of new tools and didactics in digital and hybrid settings. The EPICURtalks will highlight the innovative teaching & learning projects at the EPICUR alliance and its eight partner universities. Hosted by the University of Freiburg\, the series will travel virtually from partner to partner\, inviting speakers from across the disciplinary spectrum to share their diverse perspectives on the future of teaching & learning in brief talks that inspire and invite further discussion.

DESCRIPTION:The EPICUR Alliance cordially invites you to its second virtual EPICURtalk and discussion on March\, 2nd\, 2021 at 5:30 pm CET \nTeaching European Identities Radio Europe I: Postcolonial Europe\nwith Pia Masurczak\, Teaching Fellow\, University College Freiburg\n\n\n\nIn her talk\, Pia Masurczak will address the outcomes and experiences of her EPICUR-seminar on Postcolonial Europe. Debates about the restitution of African art and artefacts\, about the arrival of refugees and migrants\, or about systemic racism have (re-)surfaced in many European countries in the past few years. These issues are at least partly connected to the colonial legacy of many European nations and Europe as a whole. \nPostcolonial thought offers ways to look at European identities and histories from a different perspective. To explore the ramifications of colonialism\, the students of this seminar shared their analyses and discussions in the form of a five-part podcast series that they produced. Each episode discusses a specific aspect of this engagement with colonial legacies. Additionally\, the students were able to gain a basic understanding of how to transfer their academic skills to a (new) journalistic format and make their information accessible to a wider\, non-academic public.  \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nThe EPICURtalks lecture will be followed by a discussion with PD Dr. Miriam Nandi\,project manager and lecturer for the EPICUR European Universities Initiative\, University College Freiburg. He will talk about the necessity to build bridges between students\, staff and stakeholders while linking the different regional networks through interdisciplinary approaches and about the need to offer students during this crisis events such as the Forum and to create a new vision of mobility and adapted programmes to guarantee them a European perspective during their studies. \nMichel Deneken has been teaching at the University of Strasbourg since 1989. He was dean of the Faculty of Catholic Theology at the University of Strasbourg from 2001 to 2009. From January 2009 to December 2016\, he was First Vice-President in charge of finance and then of initial and continuing education at the University of Strasbourg. In December 2016\, he was elected Chairman of the University of Strasbourg.  \n  \nProf. Hirth is responsible for entrepreneurial activities at KIT – one of the two leading German universities in this sector – and will talk about the fact that research\, teaching and innovation must interlock directly if we want to be successful\, both as a European university and as a society. \n \nProfessor Dr. Thomas Hirth became director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Interfacial Engineering and Biotechnology IGB\, Stuttgart in 2007. From 2008 to 2015 he in addition has been professor at the University of Stuttgart and head of the Institute of Interfacial Process Engineering and Plasma Technology and from 2012 to 2015\, Thomas Hirth has been vice-dean of the Faculty of Energy-\, Process-\, and Bio-Engineering at the University of Stuttgart. Since January 01\, 2016\, he has been Vice-President for Innovation and International Affairs of KIT. Moreover\, he is chairman of the Steering Committee of ProcessNet and Spokesperson of the THINKTANK Industrial Resource Strategies. \n  \n– Digital ERASMUS Feeling Challenge  \nAudience: Students (all study levels) of the EPICUR Universities. \nClick here for more information on the Challenge. \nBefore challenging students to explore new digital formats to create similar or even identical results during a virtual semester abroad\, we have invited students and alumni of all ages to share their ERAMUS experience by sending videos. \nDuring the forum\, groups of students from the 8 universities will form teams of 5 to 7. Together they will brainstorm to define the important factors contributing to the Erasmus feeling by capturing small facets. On the last day\, each group will have 3 minutes to present a solution by giving a lecture\, showing a video\, photos or even making a musical presentation of their ideas. The best ideas will be rewarded with various prizes. \nThis challenge will take place in three steps: \n\nThe kick-off session with the creation of the groups and an introductory speech by Oana Dumitrescu\, Director General for Education and Culture at the European Commission.\nThe following day\, the activity will continue with tutorials and discussions in the morning and an Erasmus quiz in the evening.\nOn Friday\, the final presentation of the “Erasmus Feeling Challenge” will take place in the presence of Kostis Giannidis\, President of the Erasmus Student Network\, followed by the award ceremony.\n\n – Keynote by Prof Phoebe Koundouri\, Director of the EIT Climate-KIC on Financing environmental projects  \nPublic event \n \nProfessor Dr. Phoebe Koundouri will introduce the emergence and requirements of entrepreneurs who tackle the issue of sustainability.
